March and Rally Saturday, August 6, 2011
SlutWalk Philadelphia will demonstrate against victim-blaming and slut-shaming – a person’s appearance is not the cause of sexual assault – with a march and rally on Saturday, August 6, 2011. We will gather at Kahn Park in Center City (11th and Pine Streets) and step-off at 11:00 a.m. Walk, roll, holler or stomp with us as we travel from 11th to Spruce Streets, Spruce to 13th Streets, 13th to Market Streets, Market to and around City Hall, and finally end up at Dilworth Plaza. At Dilworth Plaza we will have several events, including the following speakers: Stephanie Gilmore, Aishah Shahidah Simmons and Qui Alexander.
The focus of SlutWalk Philadelphia is to challenge the thinking that it’s acceptable to live in a victim-blaming society as we do. We are taught “don’t get raped,” instead of, “don’t rape”. The goal of SlutWalk Philadelphia is to raise awareness so we start dialogues with one another about ways in which our society perpetuates a culture that blames and shames the victim. This isn’t just a women’s issue nor is it just a men’s issue. It’s everyone’s issue. Slutwalks bring the issue out in the open and like, now conversations begin and lead to education.
